Boeing’s new widebodied 787 Dreamliner might still be in the focus of many airlines but Boeing doesn’t plan on shutting down its legendary Boeing 747 line anytime soon. The new passenger version of the Boeing 747 called the 747-8 Intercontinental took to the skies for a test flight that lasted four hours and 25 minutes. The day’s test is only the first of several hundred hours of testing that the jetliner will go through. Boeing has stated that the 747-8I is 16 per cent more power efficient and around 30 per cent quieter than the 747-400.
A larger, more power-efficient jetliner
The new airliner inherits most of its characteristics from the Boeing 747-400 but also includes developments done for the Boeing 787. The new 787-8I is 17 feet longer in length and its wings are close to 13 feet longer than the older 747. Another visual difference is the use of the new GE GenX engine and a slightly different looking nacelle, which is also being used on the Boeing 787. There have been 33 orders for the new 747-8I so far mainly coming from Luftstansa and Korea Air. The first of the new planes will reach their customers by the end of this year.
