Video search engine, blinkx, has unveiled a new site that combines the ‘sit back and watch’ element of traditional television with the interactive experience of searching and watching video online.
blinkx now delivers results in an interface designed for sampling and showcasing video footage. With the introduction of customizable Video Walls, automatically generated popular content Channels, and a My Playlist feature, blinkx gives users a way to interact with online video, customize their own channels, and have more control in how they explore rich media on the Web.
“People are much better at understanding information visually, so we redesigned blinkx.tv to display video in a way that’s both efficient and compelling to the eye,” said Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CTO, blinkx. “We’ve always worked to get to the heart of rich media content at blinkx. Two years ago, we reinvented video search with advanced speech recognition and transcription technology, rather than standard metadata-based keyword solutions; now we’ve transformed the way we present the results to users. Video should be delivered visually, not as a text-based list of results.”
blinx features Video Wall where users can now click ‘wall it’ after searching to create a customized Video Wall of results. The Video Wall is a large screen composed of 25 individual screens, each showing a preview of a different video clip. In this format, users can see many more results at a glance than in a text list, and can scroll over the clips to watch a preview, making it easy to choose footage. Users can embed their customized Video Walls in other websites, like their blog or myspace page, so they can share interests with others.
The video search engine is also introducing an easy way to create a customized channel experience with My Playlist. Users will have control over how they group and watch clips by dragging and dropping clips into My Playlist, which will then play clips consecutively as a customized channel. Once created, Playlists can also be shared with other users over e-mail.
Users will find auto-generated channels of the most timely and popular topics on the new blinkx.tv homepage.
In addition, when a user conducts a search, blinkx will suggest relevant channels based on the user’s initial search topic that will appear as suggestions in addition to individual video clips search results.
Born with the sole aim of correcting people, Sharon took to copy-editing at an early age. In the olden days her methods of correction were rather unorthodox. Don't believe us? Ask the intern who lost two of his er.... Oh ok, I guess we don't talk about that. Now after she got a kid, things have relatively mellowed down. Besides handling the plethora of content that comes out of Tech2, Sharon also handles our sister site, CompareIndia where you can well compare prices of pretty much every electronic item under the sun and CHIP magazine as well, if things weren't heavy enough. She handles a team, all of who seem real happy as long as they're not chained to their desks.
