BlackBerry World has 120,000 apps now; Skype launching today

BlackBerry Live 2013 saw a lot more than just the launch of the mid-end Q5 and the spread of BBM to Android and iOS. The Canadian company has confirmed that its BlackBerry World store is now home to over 120,000 apps.

On the occasion, the company also announced that Skype will be launching for BlackBerry Z10. The new app will be rolling out coinciding with the BlackBerry 10.1 firmware update that users are set to get today.

120,000 apps and counting!

In a blog post announcing the launch of the app, Skype says that it is still in preview version for BlackBerry 10 right now. Earlier in April, Skype had launched the preview version of the app for Q10 only. Linda Summers from Skype writes in the blog that while the cross platform messaging and video calling app is still in preview, users will still get features associated with Skype, including free video and voice calling, instant messaging and calling on landlines and mobiles all over the world. Skype has said that it’s going to be working closely with BlackBerry over the next few months to release a full app.

BlackBerry launched its much-awaited BlackBerry 10 operating system alongside the Z10 in January this year. Considering the fact that it started out with about 70,000 apps, 120,000 in less than six months is a great achievement for the platform. The BlackBerry World store is now slowly but surely creeping up to the Windows Phone Store that is still at around 145,000 apps only.

With the launch of the new mid-end Q10, the platform’s adoption is bound to go up. The number of apps we see in the store too will shoot up further. From a nervous, grim picture that BlackBerry had been sporting in the beginning of the year, the company has gone to being in a very comfortable position now – and the number of apps and their quality has a lot to do with it.
