BlackBerry 10 now offers more than 100,000 apps

BlackBerry has announced that BlackBerry 10’s app store, the BlackBerry World has now crossed 100,000 apps ahead of its US launch.

The company stated that since the launch of the BlackBerry 10 devices in January, the company has seen over 30,000 applications being added to its new platform.

Some of the apps that have recently made it to the BlackBerry World include, Amazon’s Kindle, OpenTable, and The Wall Street Journal. The company also promised that in the coming weeks CNN, The Daily Show Headlines, eBay, eMusic, Maxim, MLB at Bat, MTV News, Pageonce, PGA, Rdio, Skype, SoundHound and Viber will be available.

Martyn Mallick, Vice President, Global Alliances at BlackBerry, said in the press release, “Top brands and application providers are joining us every day and are seeing the benefits of being early supporters of the new platform. We constantly hear from developers that the BlackBerry 10 tools are easy to build with and that we provide opportunities for app differentiation that they do not see on other platforms.”

As this piece on_ ZDNet_points out,BlackBerry’s store has got a significant boost via Android porting. This means that a lot of developers have not actually developed native apps using BlackBerry’s software developer kits (SDKs) and rather ported apps from other platforms albeit with minor changes.

For instance Instagram hasn’t actually released a native app but an Android version of the app was ported to the BlackBerry platform. The app has received positive reviews.

Hopefully BlackBerry will be able to get more apps on its platform, soon, if it hopes to compete with Android and iOS.
