Microsoft issued a number of updates to Bing Maps yesterday, which include what they call their largest shipments of Bird’s Eye imagery so far.
Bing Maps has been updated with nearly 270 terabytes of Bird’s Eye imagery now, that is equivalent of 100,000 DVDs. In an attempt to give a perspective to users on Bird’s Eye imagery available on Bing Maps, Microsoft reveals that till date, Bing has published a total of 1,452,958 sq km, or half a petabyte of data, of Bird’s Eye imagery from around the world. In this particular release, Microsoft has covered locations like, Tampere, Kuopio (Finland), Rome, Milan (Italy), Kaanapali (Hawaii), Stavanger, Ringerike (Norway), Toledo (Ohio), to name a few.

In addition to Bird’s Eye View imagery, Bing Maps now has Venue Maps, that are essentially detailed maps depicting a point of interest. So, the next time you find yourself lost in a gigantic mall in the US, these Venue Maps can come to your rescue. Bing Maps now has over 4,700 Venue Maps in over 59 countries. Using these maps, Microsoft says users can find their way around malls, airports, amusement parks and more using their Windows phone, tablet, or PC.
Venue Maps on Bing Maps
When viewing Venue Maps on Bing Maps and within a zoom level of 1000 feet, users will spot purple and green polygons to outline specific points of interest for a given venue. Green shading indicates restaurants, while stores show up in purple. Clicking on any of the outlined polygons will open a directory with a full list of points of interest and give users options to visually explore additional floors of the venue.
Finally, Bing Maps now has the “Report a problem” feature. If users spot an incorrect outlined feature, they can inform the Bing Maps team about. They have to click on the point of interest in question and click on “Report a problem”.
