All you PC gamers will always scratch your heads at news like this. Why on Earth would you want to buy a gaming console when getting a game to run at “1080p@60fps” is unusual , right? That’s an argument for another time. For now, rejoice ye console peasants for Bethesda has promised to ensure that Doom will churn out 60fps at 1080p on the PS4 and Xbox One. Yes, the Xbox One as well. Of course, 60fps on PC is a given so we won’t waste any more breath on it.
Given the inherent restrictions of console hardware, creating a visually stunning game, particularly a visually stunning FPS game, is a feat of engineering. To add to those woes, the Xbox One is slightly inferior to the PS4 in terms of graphics and games on that console have, so far, been crippled a wee bit in comparison to those on the PS4.
Bethesda , Doom’s developer, have at their disposal a crack team of developers with experience working at Crytek and id Software . The former is well known for its exceptionally powerful game engine (2013’s Crysis 3 is still bringing PCs to their knees) and the latter were the original developers and creators of the Doom franchise. This entire team has been working on an entirely new game engine, idTech 6, which will be powering Doom on all platforms.
The new game, Doom , is in many ways a more apt reboot of the franchise than Doom 3 was in 2004. The upcoming Doom game is set to bring back the frenetic, pedal-to-the-metal action that defined 1993’s Doom and the FPS genre for quite some time after that. Also included are a focus on multiplayer (Yay!) and SnapMap, a powerful level-editor that will give you access to almost the same level of power and control as the developers themselves.
All said and done, to say that we’re excited for Doom would be an understatement. May 13th just can’t come soon enough. If like us, you’re waiting with bated breath for the game’s release, try and satiate your desires with the following video. It helps.
