In a rather interesting development, BenQ has decided to exit the optical media industry. It plans to form an alliance with its rival Liteon. The move will give Lite-On a market share of 27% and will push it to the number 2 spot in optical disc drive manufacturers in the world. BenQ is giving up its optical disc manufacturing business to focus on its financial troubles. As of late BenQ’s last batch of optical storage products, specifically DVD writers were peaking at the top of the charts in performance. Lite-On has not always had the best devices in the industry, as compared to BenQ’s recent products that have been fairly bleeding edge. Recently many review sites found BenQ’s use of the Philips Nexperia chipset to be very advanced and superior over any other optical storage manufacturer’s products in performance and reliability.
