Today will mark the end of Twitter India and Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) ambitious #ThankYouSachin campaign. If you have not already sent in a tweet requesting for a digigraph of the batting legend, you have one last chance to do so.
BCCI along with Twitter India kicked off the #ThankYouSachin campaign earlier this month, on the eve of his final test series. The master-blaster has hung up his boots after playing against the West Indies in his 200th test match in Mumbai, played between November 14 and November 16. The campaign was kicked off to “thank” Tendulkar for his contribution to cricket in India.

To ensure that this social media exercise grabs maximum eyeballs, Twitter has been sending out mails to users informing them of the end of the activity today. “Own a piece of history,” the mail reads. “Tweet to get a personalised photo from Sahcin!” Getting a digigraph – a digital autograph – is simple. You need to mention @BCCI and put in the hashtag #ThankYouSachin with an optional personal message for Tendulkar. There are multiple collectable images on which Sachin’s autograph and inspirational handwritten messages are imposed.
Late last week, post Tendulkar’s final match, Rishi Jaitly for Twitter India announced that the campaign had generated a whopping 3 million tweets already. The digigraph themselves had been viewed 4 million times. Most importantly, a thank you message came from Tendulkar himself, acknowledging the campaign becoming the most retweeted tweet in India, with the current counter standing at 16,888 RTs and 11,389 favourites.

Of course, a campaign of this magnitude is bound to attract trolls. Early on in the #ThankYouSachin campaign, trolls would end up tricking the digigraph into abusing them. Even while Tendulkar’s 199th test match was under way at Kolkata, Twitter users would change their display names to the choicest Hindi abuses before tweeting to BCCI. Of course, the spam filter failing to pick up on these ended up looking like Tendulkar and BCCI were abusing Twitter users in the digigraph.
All’s well that ends well, though. The trolls have left and #ThankYouSachin is, by far, one of the more successful campaigns on Twitter and you can still catch the Sachin-fever for another few hours.
