AverMedia's new Game Capture HD II has smartphone controls

AverMedia has unveiled the Game Capture HD II, which is a standalone game recording box. Gamers can not only record, but also commentate on, edit and share game footage straight from the device. An iOS app, GameMate, is also announced along with Game Capture HD II to provide better control over game recording. As the name might imply, the Game Capture HD II is the successor to AVerMedia’s Game Capture HD.

Game Capture HD II accepts component input while adopting HDMI connections for video input and passing through. It supports mainstream gaming platforms including PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360 and the upcoming Xbox One. The maximum game resolution supported is 1080p at 60 frames per second, which is what many game titles claim to run on the next-generation game consoles.

The Game Capture HD II lets you directly upload to YouTube

The device allows “pause recording”, with which users can pause and resume whenever they decide to skip a few scenes. It also features the option to add watermarks and voice commentary. Coupled with network connection capabilities, the device seems like a halfway decent deal for those who want to start their own YouTube gameplay channel. With the built-in video editor and uploader, file renaming, multi-trimming a video clip, and YouTube sharing can be done directly without a PC.

The companion app, GameMate, is designed to solve the long-standing problems people have when recording gameplay. Pair it up with the Game Capture HD II, and it turns a user’s smartphone into a monitor for checking recording status, a file manager, and an additional remote control. Currently, the GameMate app is only available on iOS App Store. An Android version is said to be in the works.
