ASUS to Announce 'Padfone' to Offer Users Best of Both Worlds

ASUS has been teasing fans on Facebook for a while now. It was just a little while ago that we saw a teaser image on their FB page hinting at a new device that would be showcased at Computex 2011. It kept us guessing if the company would be announcing a new tablet device of a smartphone, but word is that it could be some sort of amalgamation of both. So here’s an interesting concept that PocketNow.com has been showcasing on a new ASUS product that could be announced sometime soon – a tablet device that allow users to dock their ASUS mobiles with it, simply dubbed the Padfone.

I’m not a fan of the name but it does seem to capture the essence of the device, quite well. Essentially the company is trying to create a product that will directly integrate your smartphone into a tablet device negating wireless hotspot creation or any other traditional form tethering devices. The ‘Padfone’ is, according to PocketNow.com a package deal made up of two separate devices viz. an Android smartphone and an Android powered Tablet. The tablet is fitted with a compartment in the rear that will allow you to store and ‘hook up’ the handset for integration with the tablets system creating somewhat of a dual device. If anything, this device should have been called the ‘Transformer’.

Is that an HDMI port?

So far the company hasn’t really made any official announcement but, it looks like a few images of the device have already made it out. Specs are yet to be released so details on just how these two devices would work with each other are not disclosed. From the images that made it out, it looks like a possible 10-inch tablet with a smartphone that has a 3.8-inch to 4-inch touchscreen. I’m assuming it would feature a 1GHz processor if it’s expected to help run the tablet smoothly. It also looks like the tablet is equipped with a set of stereo speakers and the mobile phone’s camera will also be the primary camera for the tablet with a secondary front-facing camera located in front of the tablet, presumably for video calling. One image also seems to indicate a possible HDMI port. It wouldn’t surprise me, seeing as how that’s become quite a mundane feature in today’s tablets.

Stay tuned for more information on the ASUS ‘Padfone’.
