Assassin's Creed III Multiplayer to have monthly challenges, evolving storyline

Assassin’s Creed 3 is one of the most highly anticipated games this year. Though we know many things about how the game will be and where it will be set, we hardly know anything about the multiplayer other than the one multiplayer trailer that Ubisoft had released last month. Recently, Computer and Video Games had a long chat with the developers of the game, Ubisoft Annecy, about the multiplayer in the upcoming game.

“The multiplayer is so big today that it’s already a game on its own. We’ve been given the right to develop the Abstergo storyline since the beginning, which is a big responsibility,” says Damien Kieken, Game Director at Ubisoft Annecy.  According to the story of the multiplayer and the trailer that Ubisoft had released last month, the main antagonists of the game – Abstergo – have decided to release the Animus machine as a game console which regular people can use to visit the past in “HD” and kill assassins.

Ubisoft seems pretty ambitious here with the way it plans to execute the multiplayer of the game. The game is set to have monthly challenges that will progress the plot of the series alongside the modern-day segments of the single player. “Abstergo Entertainment will give you insights on the company’s future initiatives by granting you access to files and information on products that will soon hit the market,” said Keiken in the interview. “As you progress in the game and level up your character, you access these files and videos. Every month you’ll have new challenges to unlock new content that will continue the storyline throughout the year.”

Assassin’s Creed III’s multiplayer sounds ambitious

The multiplayer in the Assassin’s Creed games has always been much different from the classic multiplayer that gamers are used to. Instead of the run-and-gun gameplay of something like Call of Duty or the team and social gameplay of something like World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed’s multiplayer has more to do with stealth. The multiplayer, much like the games themselves, has players blending into crowds to try and remain unseen while trying to scope out their targets and quickly moving in for the kill without alerting other players. The new game in the series looks to add new features to the multiplayer.

The Assassin’s Creed series deals with a secret war that has lasted millennia between the Assassins and the Templars. The Assassins seek to fight for the free will of people, while the Templars seek to control them. The first game was set during the Holy Crusades in Jerusalem. Protagonist Altaïr ibn-La’Ahad would have to jump from rooftops and sneak into groups of people in order to find and assassinate his targets.

The second game was set during the Renaissance era in Florence. The main protagonist of the “II” series of games (which are Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations) is Ezio Auditore. The II series of games dealt with the evolution of Ezio as a character, who starts out as a revenge-driven teenager only to become a highly-skilled master of Assassins. Altaïr also makes an appearance in Revelation, showing the aged assassin’s last few days. The secondary protagonist of the series is Desmond Miles, who is accessing his “genetic memory” to live the lives of his Ancestors Altaïr and Ezio.

Assassin’s Creed III will be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 30, and the PC version will be released on November 20.
