You may not have logged onto it for some years, but this is a loss that certainly will sting for some. Google has finally announced that it will be shutting down Orkut, the social network that was there for pretty much everyone (at least in India), well before the Facebook era domination began. According to a blogpost by the official Orkut blog , “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell (or, tchau). We’ll be focusing our energy and resources on making these other social platforms as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them.” Google said it will shut down Orkut, which is widely used in Brazil and India but hasn’t caught on more broadly, on 30 September. The company declined to say how many users Orkut has. Users can download an archive of the scraps, testimonials from Orkut by going to the Google Takeout page here.
