Apple’s Jony Ive may have redirected his efforts from iPhone to Spaceship campus and stores

In the past decade Apple has proved its mettle for designing the most iconic products under the leadership of design chief Jony Ive. From the iPod range and iPhone to iPad and iMac, these products have made heads turn. However, the last couple of years haven’t been the same for the Cupertino company. The iPhone hasn’t undergone drastic design change ever since the iPhone 6 in 2014, and the company arguably hasn’t managed to pull out a jaw-dropping design like it once did. Now, news has it, according to journalist Jason Snell, who appeared on John Gruber’s “The Talk Show” podcast, Jony Ive is now focused on Apple’s Spaceship campus and store design along with retail head Angela Ahrends. “I’ve heard that he has lately been checked out or not as directly involved with product design and that he’s been largely focused on architecture, meaning the spaceship campus and the new stores. And that maybe the other top-level executive who’s been working the most with Ive is Angela Arhendts,” the podcast revealed. Ever since this statement, there began a lot of discussion over Apple products over the years. It is around the same time that Apple has released a book showcasing the Apple product designs that go all the way back to 1998, and speculation is rife that it could be a ‘signal’ that Ive is approaching his retirement from his role. However, Gruber has now taken to explain in a post on Daring Fireball saying he didn’t hear about Ive being on his way out. However, it does mention concentrating on other projects like the campus and stores. “I’ve also heard from well-placed sources within Apple that there is nothing to this — that while Ive is devoting much of his time and attention to architecture recently (both for the new campus and Apple retail), every aspect of every new product remains as much under his watchful eye as ever. That his chief design officer title isn’t the least bit ceremonial, and instead is an accurate representation of his increased authority,” he explains.
