Apple today announced a couple of brand new products and after the announcement of the iPhone SE, came the announcement of the new smaller 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The iPad Pro will be available for order starting 24 March in the US and is priced at $599 for the 32GB version, $749 for the 128GB version and $899 for the 256GB variant (which is a first for Apple). All of the devices will be Wi-Fi only.
Yes, Phil Schiller took to the stage to announce what he tagged as the "ultimate PC replacement", the iPad Pro. The 9.7 inch model similar to the leaks of the past pack in some features from the 12-inch iPad Pro and will even come with some Pro accessories.
Schiller commented "Customers have fallen in love with the huge 12.9-inch Retina Display, performance, Pencil". Claiming that the 9.7-inch model was the more popular one (with over 200 million sold) which is the reason why Apple decided to build a smaller and more compact model that now weighs a pound less.
Coming to the specs, Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Pro features a 9.7-inch Oxide TFT Display which is 40 percent less reflective and 25 percent brighter than the iPad Air 2. The display also features 25 percent greater colour saturation and works well with Night Shift. Apple brands the display a True Tone display.
In the audio department, 9.7-inch iPad Pro owners will be treated to Pro audio with a 4 speaker set up similar to the one on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro that deliver twice the volume of the iPad Air 2.
Inside, Apple has gone with the all-powerful A9X chipset with 12-cores for graphics processing. As usual the company did not mention the RAM, but we are guessing that this too comes with a similar 4GB. This however cannot be confirmed for now.
The camera department consists of a 12MP primary unit with Focus Pixels, True Tone flash while the front facing unit is a 5MP one. The iPad also shoots 4K video.
Last but not the least, Apple thankfully decided to deliver a Smart Keyboard for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The display also supports input from the Apple Pencil. Other accessories include Lightning adapters with a USB camera adapter as well as an SD card reader.
Lastly, Schiller also announced that the bigger iPad Pro 12.9 inch will also be available in a 256GB variant.
The Apple iPad Pro will be available in 4 colours including Rose Gold, gold, Slate Grey and silver and will start shipping from 31 March in the US.
