Apple unveils 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus

Just as most leaks have suggested Apple has finally announced two new iPhones and unlike last year the big difference this time around is the screen sizes. Apple announced the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus today. Let’s find out more about them.   The two new larger phones will be much larger than the current 4-inch crop, with the iPhone 6 clocking in a 4.7-inch display and the phablet-sized iPhone 6 Plus boasting a 5.5-inch display. The iPhone 6 Plus is by far the largest phone Apple has created, and will push the recently announced Galaxy Note 4 for the top spot in the high-end segment. The front of the iPhone 6 Plus is made with what Apple calls ‘ion-strengthened glass’ but there wasno mention of sapphire crystal display that did the rounds in the rumour mill.   Apple has dropped the 32GB model on both phones. The 16GB iPhone 6 will go on sale for $199 (around Rs 12,000) on-contract, while the 64GB and 128GB versions are priced at $299 and $399. The Plus model  is priced slightly higher at $299 for the 16GB model and the 64GB and 128GB options for $399 and $499 on a two-year contract. Both will go on sale on September 12 in the US and in over 100 countries by year-end.       Both phones feature anodized aluminum backs and the iPhone 6 is 6.9 mm thick, while the Plus model is 7.1 mm slim, both thinner than the iPhone 5S. The Plus model comes with a few extra software features, such as in landscape mode, the mail or contacts or calendar app will show two panes with expanded content on one side, similar to the iPads, while the keyboard gets dedicated copy-cut-paste buttons.   The screen resolution for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus has been increased to 1920 x 1080 pixels, while the 4.7-incher gets a 1334x750 pixel resolution display. Both are being called Retina HD by Apple.

The new iPhones will run iOS 8 out of the box and it will arrive as an update on September 17 on supported devices. The new iPhones feature the A8 64-bit processor, which is said to be 25 percent faster than the A7 according to Apple and also boasts 50 percent faster graphics. The A8 comes with M8 the second-gen custom motion co-processor, which can distinguish between running and cycling, and also track elevation.

The iPhone 6 series has 8MP primary cameras and while the megapixel count might not have changed, a lot else has. They come with OIS for one and can shoot slow-motion videos at 240 fps. The camera features an f/2.2 aperture lens and dual-LED flash, and a new autofocus system that uses pixels on the image sensor to focus 2x faster. Panorama images can now be up to 43 megapixels in size.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Apple claims the iPhone 6 will offer 14 hours of talk time, while the iPhone 6 Plus is claimed to offer a full day of talk time on 3G. These are great numbers, but we will have to see how they stand up in real world usage.  The iPhone 6 supports 20 LTE bands and comes with Wi-Fi ac support too.
