Apple who is renowned for its quick adoption of emerging technologies may soon add another feather to its list. It may, later this year, start selling laptops that do away with conventional HDDs in favor of the faster flash memory which it commonly uses on its lower-end iPods. This prediction made by an analyst who has said that this shift will occur in the sub-notebooks market by Q2 of 2007.
Flash memory, have several advantages over conventional HDDs. Unlike standard solutions, which have moving parts that are bulky, are subject to wear and tear and slow down with age, Flash memory is quicker and lighter, uses less power and is takes up a fraction of the space that HDDs do. For PC users this means faster booting machines, quicker restoration of work areas in laptops and generally faster performance.
