DVD Jon, crusader of anti DRM policy, has reversed Apple’s DRM software, Fairplay, to replicate the technology used in Apple’s online music store, iTunes, and offering it to companies who want their content such as music, movies and video clips to play on Apple devices. His program will enable people to buy songs off any online digital music store and transfer them onto Apple’s portable Mp3 players, the iPods. As of now, Apples DRM, Fairplay, makes sure that iPods are compatible only with the songs bought on iTunes.
DVD Jon now partners with Monique Farantzos in a company called Double Twist Ventures, which “focuses on the development of interoperability solutions for digital media and the reverse engineering of proprietary systems for which licensing options are non-existent or impractical”.
Although the pair has already met CEO of Apple Inc, Steve Jobs, to work around a licensing policy, they have not revealed details to the media. However, they seem sure that Apple will not take legal action against them because instead of stripping the DRM, their technology will actually add another layer on top of what already exists. This might help Apple sell more iPods, in the face of competition from Microsoft’s Zune.
