Apple taking back some new Macbook Air units with Wi-Fi issues

At WWDC this year, Apple unveiled upgraded Macbook Air notebooks running Intel’s newest Haswell processors. Now 9to5Mac reports that some users are facing an issue with getting online using Wi-Fi on the new notebooks, both variants of which support 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The Cupertino giant has reportedly taken note and is known to be working on a fix, although at the moment, the root of the problem has not been revealed.

Apple has instructed its AppleCare and Apple Store Genius Bar employees in the US to “capture” faulty units. These Macbook Airs have been taken back by the company for further testing and to find a fix for the Wi-Fi issue. It must be noted that not all such captured units will be considered for replacement, if at all. The move simply means Apple thinks they’re flawed and wants to further test them.

Incidentally, the website reports that some customers managed to get their buggy notebooks replaced with new ones. One of these customers said AppleCare bundled in a complementary USB-to-Ethernet adapter, so they can connect using the traditional LAN cable. These customers were also informed that their new Airs have been captured.

The refreshed Macbook Airs are available in the same 11.6 and 13.3-inch variants as before, and the upgrades are all under the hood. The 11-inch Air is said to have a 9 hour battery, nearly doubling the earlier 5 hour rating. The refreshed 13-inch Macbook Air will keep humming for 12 long hours as opposed to the 7 hours the earlier version could last. Both are available in 128GB or 256GB storage configurations.
