Apple sells 9 million iPhones on launch weekend

Apple has now announced that nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models have been sold since the official launch on Friday. The figure sets a new record for the company, which earlier saw 5 million units of the iPhone 5 being sold last year over the opening weekend.

The company would not break down the number to show the official figures for individual models, but all evidence points to the iPhone 5s being more popular than the slightly cheaper and more colourful iPhone 5c. The former, which comes with a fingerprint scanner, an improved camera and faster processor, was sold out in stores across the world and online in a matter of minutes, with the deliver dates slipping to October.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Both the iPhone models are currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. There is no word yet on when the models will officially hit India, but it is expected to come to the market before the end of the year.

The new iPhone is here

9 million iPhone 5s and 5c models were sold over the launch weekend

Here’s a recap on both the phones: The iPhone 5s comes with a new A7 64-bit chip, an all-new 8-megapixel iSight camera as well as a new Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, comes with a 4-inch Retina display, an A6 chip as well as an 8-megapixel iSight camera. The USP of the latter model is the bright, plastic-packing avatar that it is being rolled out in.

Along with the new phones, the company also revealed a few other numbers. More than 200 million iOS users downloaded and installed the new iOS7, which began rolling out last week. This makes the update, according to the company, “the fastest software upgrade in history.” The update comes with a host of new features, including a new Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, an improved Photo gallery and Siri. Take a look at our first impressions to know more about iOS 7.

Apple also revealed the number for its new free Internet radio service, iTunes Radio. The company has said that over 11 million unique listeners have already signed up for iTunes Radio since launch.
