Apple, Samsung CEOs to meet in court-directed mediation

A rather positive turn in the now longstanding patent lawsuit involving the iPhone maker and South Korea-based, Samsung Electronics may be in the offing. Reports coming in confirm that the chief executives of the two companies are scheduled to meet today and tomorrow, in what essentially is a court-directed mediation. The two companies, who were once friends have been involved in a host of patent lawsuits, stretching to several countries across the world, since a while now and this court-directed mediation is, at this hour an attempt to help the companies iron out all their differences and will be overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero.

Reports state that Apple’s Tim Cook and Samsung’s Choi Gee-sung will as per the court’s direction be present for mediation in San Francisco today. A post by  Foss Patents, citing the court-directed effort stated that, “With the companies’ CEOs and chief lawyers scheduled to meet tomorrow and the day after for court-moderated settlement talks that are highly unlikely to yield a result, there will be more attention to this Apple v. Samsung case than most of the time.”

Mediation talks on..

Apple and Samsung were friends once and share a complex relationship as Samsung is a key components supplier to Apple. Reports add that, “Legal experts say the two firms are far from a settlement. Samsung, for example, argues its technologies are worth 402,000 won, or 60 percent of the iPhone retail price of 671,000 won, on the basis that 3G is the only function differentiating the phone from Apple’s digital music player iPod Touch. Apple says Samsung’s technology should be confined to modem chip prices, or 2.9 percent of iPhone prices at best.” It further has been revealed in the report that on Sunday in Seoul, the head of Samsung’s mobile division asserted that the company wanted to resolve differences with Apple. “There is still a big gap in the patent war with Apple. But we still have several negotiation options,”  JK Shin was further quoted as saying that he was leaving for the U.S to participate in the mediation talks.

The outcome of these talks will be clear in the days to come, and nevertheless will be a crucial one. To know all about the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit, click here.
