Apple rolls out 'instore pick up option' for new iPhones from official retail stores

Apple is now offering users a new "personal pickup option" for the new iPhones from its retail stores...

Apple’s new iPhone offerings are back in the news. This time around, the company has now rolled out a Personal Pickup option for the iPhone 5s through its online purchase page. The service will essentially allow customers to see availability for each model and place orders accordingly for an in-store pickup. The iPhone maker has also said that customers, on arrival at the store, will receive help to set up the device, so that they are “up and running before leaving the store.”

The company, while explaining the process, has said that users need to choose the “Pick up” option when they check out the stores, and then select the nearest Apple Retail Store. It has also said that products “available today” can usually be picked up within an hour of placing an order. Users will also receive a notification email when their order is ready to be picked up. Users have the option of either picking up the order themselves, or letting someone they approve of pick up the new iPhone for them. All users need to do to find the store close to them is punch in their zip code.

The move comes hot on the heels of Apple showing record sales of the iPhone 5s, with the initial online order stock selling out soon after the official launch on Friday. The current shipping estimates in the US have now slipped to October. The in-store pickup option is also available for the iPhone 5c, although the “budget” iPhone registered better availability than the 5s.

The company has stated that it received “incredible” demand for the new iPhones within hours of the launch, while acknowledging the scarcity of supply of the 5s models, according to AllThingsD. The Gold model of the 5s, in particular, was popular and the company has reportedly ordered its suppliers to boost productions of that model by one-third.

The company also announced that it sold nine million iPhones over the launch weekend, beating its earlier records of five million iPhone 5 units being sold last year. There was no break-up of individual products, though. A quick recap of the specifications reveals that the iPhone 5s comes with quite a few new features including a new “Touch ID” fingerprint sensor, a 64-bit A7 chip as well as a new iSight camera with a dual-LED “True Tone” flash. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, comes with most of the tech seen in the iPhone 5, but sports a better battery and a bright plastic back panel instead of the traditional metal casing.
