Apple rolls out fix for Retina MacBook Pro's trackpad, keyboard issues

When Apple launched its new line-up of Haswell-powered Retina MacBook Pros last month, many users had turned to the company’s support forums to complain about the new laptops, saying that the keyboard and trackpad of the 13-inch variant was found to be faulty. The company has now rolled out an official fix for the issue, and is available for download via Software Update in the Mac App Store.

The fix, titled “MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update v1.3”, comes with a summary that reads, “This update is recommended for MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, late 2013) models. This update addresses an issue where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive.” The file is sized at 4.64MB and is obviously applicable only to laptops running on Mac OS X 10.9 aka Mavericks. In addition to this, Apple has also released an update for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro to address issues relating to the NVIDIA graphics chipset.

New MacBook Pro users, soon after purchase, began complaining of an unresponsive system freeze, keyboard issues and an unusable trackpad. All the complaints, though, indicated that the problem only lasted for a 10 or 15 minutes. Users, however, had noted that in most cases the power button was responsive, allowing users to manually restart their machines every time it stopped working.

To calm users, Apple had released a statement saying, “Apple is aware of rare circumstances where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (Late 2013) computers and is working on an update to resolve this behavior.” The company, at the time, had offered an interim solution by saying, “If you experience this issue, reset the keyboard and trackpad by closing the computer’s display for approximately one minute and then open it.”

During the October launch event, Apple had said that the latest Intel chipset would make the new laptops up to 90 percent faster than their predecessors. The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at Rs 99,900, weighs in at 1.62kgs and measures 19mm in thickness. Check out our comparison between the new model and the 2012 MacBook Pro to find out what else is different in the machine. The 15-inch MacBook Pro, starting from Rs 1, 49,900, weighs in at a heavier 2.02kgs and measures 18mm in thickness. Other features include a new Crystal Iris Pro graphics chip, 8GB of RAM, a 256SSD, Wi-Fi 801.11ac support packed in.
