For those not in the know how, Activation Lock is a security feature introduced along with iOS 7, which prevents others from erasing or activating your iOS device without your Apple ID and password. While it works in favour of those who have their Apple devices lost or stolen, it is essential that one disables this feature before a device is passed on or sold to a different person. On failing to do so, the new owner won’t be able to download apps or use a majority of the device’s features.

How does it work? Simply visit  iCloud.com/ActivationLock , and enter the IMEI or Serial Number of your Apple device (typically mentioned on the back of the device). If the website tells you that the device is locked, the current user will need to key in the owner’s Apple ID and password. This also renders stolen devices useless to the one it’s being sold to. If the activation has been turned off, then you will instantly get a green signal stating the device is ready to set up and you will see a message - Activation Lock: Off.

The tool will make it easier for customers who are buying a used iOS device via online resell sites. The customer can then check if the feature has been disabled before purchasing the device. Alternatively, it’s important that you sign out of iCloud and erase your settings before selling it. This you can do by going to Settings|General|Reset|Erase all Content and Settings.
