Apple releases iOS 5.1.1; Redsn0w jailbreak available for devices using A4 chip

If one were of the thinking that the next software update from Apple for their iOS devices would only start coming out in the coming month after their annual WWDC event, then they can go back to guessing again, as the Cupertino company has just released a minor update in the form of iOS 5.1.1. With the latest update to their operating system, Apple has dished out a range of bug fixes, which include reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut and a fix for the issue that switches between 2G and 3G networks on the new iPad. There are other additions, as well, which are improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List, a fix for the bug that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances and also the problem where the ‘Unable to purchase’ alert would be displayed, despite a successful purchase.

For those of you who are in the dark about updating their iOS devices, here is a quick how-to guide to help you smoothen the already smooth upgrading procedure.

Ever since Apple announced iOS 5, one could download the software update over the air (OTA). To do this all one needs to do is head over to settings on their iOS device, then go to general, after that hit the software update option. A user will then have to wait, while the device checks if the software is up to date. After that a screen will appear prompting one to install the update. After tapping it, a terms and conditions page will appear. If one does agree to these terms and conditions, then the software update will take place automatically, thereafter. For this update, the size for download is 47.3 MB; this indicates that it may be a minor update as compared to iOS 5 and iOS 5.1. After the download completes, a pop up message will appear asking if the desired changes should take place. On agreeing, the screen will go black with only the Apple logo present on the screen. After that, one should let the device complete its procedure. There is no need to touch it. Once the device has been restarted, the latest version of the iOS will be present. Alternatively, one can just sync the device to a computer with iTunes installed and follow the onscreen procedure.

Shortly after the update was released, a band of jailbreakers, released a jailbreak for this update. To know more on how to jailbreak your iOS device using an A4 chipset, click here. Let us know if you find any other improvements besides the ones stated above.
