Apple is navigating a tricky transition in the way users consume music. Users move from permanent downloads to using radio streaming services. In 2015, for the first time there were more people subscribing to music streaming services than permanent digital downloads. However, if only Apple is considered, three times as many people preferred permanent downloads as compared to the streaming service. This is leading to internal competition between Apple’s services. The iTunes store is known to have exclusive content, and albums release ahead of any other platform. However, those who subscribe for the $9.99 per month streaming service, expect to have the exclusive iTunes content available for streaming as well. Apple’s streaming service has a much smaller user base compared to Pandora or Spotify. Apple is also competing with YouTube. Considering the number of people who use Apple devices, the market share of their streaming service should have been bigger. Apple’s catalogue is vast and impressive, but it sits behind a confusing interface that is a pain to navigate. Apple is being criticized for not having the same attention to detail in their software design, as their hardware. Apple is planning to revamp the UI of their streaming service, to make it more user friendly and accessible. Apple’s Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, iTunes content head Robert Kondrk and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor are revamping the user interface for Apple’s streaming service, according to a report in Bloomberg. Profits and earnings dropped , and the smartphone market started to stagnate. As stock plummets, and iPhone sales flatline, CEO Tim Cook is focusing on the software and services for revenue generation.
