Apple may integrate Facebook in iOS 6

When Apple announced iOS 5, one of the main talking points of the update was that it had deep Twitter integration allowing one to easily share content on the micro-blogging site. However, one was left quite clueless about as to how the world’s largest social network, Facebook was left out of this equation. As per a report by TechCrunch, it appears that this could be the case no more and Apple will integrate Facebook into their operating system and this feature will be shown off at their Worldwide Developers Conference event, scheduled to begin in a few days.

Official Facebook app finally coming to iPad

A Facebook share option to be baked in iOS 6?

As per the report, though details are scarce, the author notes, “After much speculation, Facebook integration will indeed be baked into the latest version of iOS, we’ve learned. It’s important to note that Apple being Apple, something could change in the next week and a half (see again: Facebook/Ping). But as of right now, Facebook is a go in iOS “Sundance”. One thing still being hammered out according to our sources is exactly how sharing will work. Sharing is the other big part of the iOS/Twitter integration, and will be important for iOS/Facebook integration as well. But Facebook is significantly more complicated than Twitter in that there are all kinds of permissions for what you can post where and who can see what. And Open Graph adds another layer of complexity to all of this.”

At the D10 conference, Tim Cook, in typical Apple fashion teased that they had something big planned, which they would be showing off at the WWDC event, but he did not elaborate on what was in store. This Facebook integration in the operating system could be definitely a part of what they are going to showcase at the event. However, it is not yet known how deeply Facebook will be tied in with iOS 6. Commenting on this, the author states, “My guess is that Apple will keep things simple with at least the initial Facebook/iOS integration. Beyond authentication, there will probably be a Facebook button in the existing share screen which will allow you to share something to your Facebook Wall.”

However, this is mere speculation on the part of the author and nothing is yet set in stone. Come WWDC 2012, during the keynote all will be known and we have to see if these rumours actually hold true.

Let us know your thoughts on Apple possibly integrating Facebook in their operating system in the comments section below.
