Apple on Wednesday introduced a new 21.5-inch iMac starting at a much 'lower' price tag of Rs 79,900. Apple has also reduced the specs for this 'affordable' version of its desktop.
The new 21.5-inch iMac features a 1.4 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost Speeds up to 2.7 GHz, Intel HD 5000 graphics, 8GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive. It also comes with the next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and two Thunderbolt ports and four USB 3.0 ports. iMac will run on the latest version of OS X Mavericks and users will get the update the OS X 10.10 Yosemite which will be out in the fall.
Other Apple apps that users should expect are iLife and iWork. iWork apps include: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. iWork for iCloud beta will let users create document on iPad, edit it on your Mac and even share with friends who have a PC (which might be most of your friends) .
The new 21.5-inch iMac is available at Rs 79,900. Configure-to-order options include a 1TB hard drive, a 1TB Fusion Drive, and up to 256GB flash storage.
As this piece in The Verge notes while there are no major changes, "it does appear that you’re not able to change and customize the 8GB of RAM that ships with the system." For Apple, the pricing does seem cheaper, given that the high-end desktops starts at Rs 92,900. But even if the company is hoping to compete with Windows Desktops from HP to Acer to other companies, the iMac still seems rather expensive.
As this Forbes piece points out Apple has " dramatically sacrificed both the performance and the storage capacity (half of the previous low-end iMac) of its new low-cost desktop computer."
All-in-all the cheaper iMac might not find too many takers.
