It’s been a long time coming, but finally, the iMac Pro, the first “pro” mac since 2013, is now officially available in India at select stores.
While this is good news, there are two caveats. First, the price of Rs 4,15,000 in India is Rs 93,000 over the cost of the same unit in the US. You can buy a new iPhone X for the price difference, and at Indian prices at that.
The second caveat is that there’s only one configuration of the iMac Pro in India. It’s admittedly a powerful option, but Mac users looking for more processing power had best look elsewhere.
For Rs 4,15,000, you get a fabulous 27-inch 5K display, an 8-core Intel Xeon W CPU clocked at 3.2 GHz, 32 GB of ECC RAM, a 1 TB SSD, a Radeon Vega56 GPU and an assortment of USB-C outputs rated for Thunderbolt 3, USB-A ports and a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port. Oh, and this is the only iMac that comes in the uber cool Space Grey colour option.
At $4999, that’s a bargain. At Rs 4,15,000, it’s overpriced.
By any measure, this is the most powerful iMac in India, but this is still only the base model and may still not be adequate for some users. In the US, the iMac Pro can be configured to take an 18-core Xeon CPU, up to 128 GB of RAM and 4 TB of storage, a Radeon Vega 64 GPU and more.
Apple has confirmed that only a handful of iMac Pros are currently being distributed at this time. Given the price of the device, this is understandable.
