Apple granted new camera technology patent; may use it in next iPhone

Cupertino giant Apple has secured a new patent which will give future iPhones the ability to shoot even better images and deliver high-quality colours. According to Apple Insider, the company has been a granted a patent for a ‘digital camera with light splitter’ which will allow Apple to embed a three-sensor prism-based camera module within the chassis of a thin wireless device, like the iPhone. The three sensor imaging technology isn’t new. It has been previously seen in products from major camera companies such as Canon, Panasonic and Philips among others, but it will be the first time that such a technology has been fitted into something as slim as a smartphone. According to the website, this technology will split the incident light that enters a camera into three wavelengths, or colours, via prisms, mirrors or lenses. This technology implemented in phones would boost its camera quality and offer a much better result in terms of colour, especially in low-light conditions. According to the report, it is yet unclear whether Apple plans to use this new technology for the next generation of iPhones. A report by TechCrunch stated that this technology would be very expensive to implement compared to the latest iPhone camera. It also pointed out that its component parts would occupy much more space which is something Apple always tries to avoid.
