While Apple iPhone sales have been breaking sales records in the smartphone space for long, the company's much-ignored MacBook lineup did not seem to do doing too well. While things could change for the better now that the revamped MacBook Pro models are out (it has not finished its first quarter yet) news according to an analyst firm claims that Apple could cull the more affordable MacBook Air range entirely to keep the sales and demand scales in check.
First reported by Wccftech, ITHome cites Taiwan's Electronic Times with a quote from analyst firm IHS Securities that expects Apple to cut down MacBook production by 16 percent. With this news predictions about Apple culling the MacBook Air lineup getting pulled off the assembly line have once again begun to surface.
While Apple has not made it official yet, the 11.6-inch MacBook Air is already off store shelves and online on its official website. The Cupertino tech giant currently only sells the 13.3-inch model in the US with two variants being listed on its online store. But with a 16 percent cut, it too may soon get taken down, now that a more powerful 10nm-based iPad Pro is on the horizon.
Wind back at the MacBook Pro launch last year, and Tim Cook proudly showed off the new range of Apple computers with just the 2016 MacBook as the base macOS model and the 2016 MacBook Pro models (with an without Touch Bar in 13-inch and 15-inch versions). The MacBook feels horribly underpowered considering its price and things get more obvious since many are still reaching out for the 13-inch MacBook Air that packs in more processing power.
But with Apple's push for its iPad Pro for basic computing, those old MacBook Airs are losing their charm. Key to these would be a the presence of a soft physical keyboard that can be paired with the Apple iPad Pro along with the fact that the Pro has better displays and even sounds better (speakers) than the ageing Air. While there are rumours that Apple may go in for the 12-inch MacBook Air, there are also rampant rumours about Apple launching 3 new iPad models in the coming months which could be the final move in deciding whether the old MacBook Air stays or gets a long-awaited update.
The Apple iPad Pro range out here in India starts from Rs 49,900 for the (32GB) 9.7-inch model with the most expensive (256GB) 12.9-inch model priced at Rs 93,900. The 13.3-inch MacBook Air in India is priced at Rs 80,900 for the 128GB version while the 256GB version will cost you Rs 96,900.
