Apple iPhones have for the longest time been synonymous with the word “premium” thanks to their hefty price tags. However, if latest reports hold any water, this may soon change.
Sources familiar with the development have told Reuters that Cupertino brand Apple is considering launching iPhones with larger displays and cheaper models in different colours over the next year – thereby taking a leaf out of rival Samsung and Nokia’s book.
Is it true?
Sources, even those in the supply chain in Asia, told the website that Apple is looking to bring at least two iPhones next year with larger displays – a 4.7-inch one and one with a 5.7-inch display. In fact, sources told Reuters that suppliers were approached with plans for those iPhones. That said, they have stressed that it is yet to be confirmed whether the company will actually launch its iPhone with bigger displays. One source said, “They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you’re not really sure whether this is the final prototype.”
While there is no saying at what price would Apple sell its cheaper iPhone, the report suggests that it has been in talks about a price of $99.
The Cupertino giant faces significant pressure to put out more than one smartphone a year, and it is believed that Apple’s “pace of innovation” hasn’t been the same since founder Steve Jobs’ death. It may be these factors that are driving the company to take this reported step.
While there weren’t talks before this about iPhones with bigger displays, we surely have been hearing about cheaper iPhones for a while now. As recent as last month, it was reported that Apple may rope in Pegatron Corp. to be primary assembler of its low-cost iPhones. Apple’s reasons for this shift – from Foxconn to Pegatron Corp. – are strategic. The Cupertino-based company may be looking at risk diversification after Foxconn’s manufacturing glitches with the iPhone 5, caused scratches on the metal casing. Apple is also looking to widen its product lines as competition from rival Samsung increases.
Among other details known at the moment, Sharp Corp., Japan Display and LG Display will supply the panels for the aluminium iPhone 5S and the plastic bodied iPhone. Hon Hai Precision Industry will work on assembling the premium iPhone and Pegatron, as stated above, will work on the cheaper model.
As for the iPhones in more colours, sources have said that, “Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colours is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards," said one source in Asia, adding 20 million plastic iPhones are expected to ship in the October-December quarter_._
