Bitcoin lovers smash iPhones to protest Apple's removal of Blockchain from App Store

Bitcoin fans have taken to a rather drastic way of showing their dissent against Apple for pulling the wallet app, Blockchain, from the App Store. A very annoyed fan took to Reddit to gift a Nexus 5 to the first 5 people willing to smash their iPhones and shoot a video of it.

Digital Trends reports that just as word was out about Apple deleting the last remaining Bitcoin wallet app on the App Store, a Reddit user decided to get creative. The user, “round-peg” proposed that for every 100 upvotes his post gets, he will gift someone a Nexus 5 for a video of them smashing their iPhones.

The only conditions put forward by the user was that there would be just 5 Nexus devices handed out on a first come first serve basis, the smashed iPhones had to be of the 5 or 5s variety, running iOS 7 and the video needed to contain the person’s face, name and reason for destroying the iPhone. Oh, and the reason should also include the fact that the uploader was protesting against Apple being anti-Bitcoin and not just because they wanted a new phone.

Sure enough, there was enough angst in the Bitcoin-using, iPhone-using community to smash iPhones in exchange for a new Nexus 5. From people smashing their phones to throwing them off walls and off ledges, five users went that extra mile to show Apple that they really care about Bitcoin wallet apps on the App Store.

While round-peg’s profile on reddit was soon banned for unknown reasons, it looks like he did keep his word and order Nexus 5 devices for these bravehearts. One of the first people to go down that path, Netpastor, put up a screenshot of the order confirmation he received too.

To make it more interesting, round-peg even said that he will also donate a Moto G to charity for each iPhone smashed. The guy sounded like he has some really deep pockets but his profile was in all probability banned because he violated a basic rule of Reddit that involved no asking for upvotes.

Of course, purely on economic terms, it makes little sense for anyone to smash an iPhone to get a Nexus 5 instead, but hardcore Bitcoin fans are angry and want Apple to know it.
