Apple App Store algorithm changes to compensate for typos

Frustrated with irrelevant or no results coming up when you slightly misspell app names on your iPhone? Apple has tweaked its App Store’s search functionality to throw up more accurate results in case of misspellings.

TechCrunch has reported that Apple has recently changed the App store’s search engine to accommodate everything from small typos to larger misspelled queries by a user. Irrelevant results have always been a concern when it came to searching on the App Store. The fact that a user may or may not know the spelling of that fancy sounding app or may not know whether or not to enter a space between two words made results even more of a pain on Apple’s store.

Getting better!

Getting better!

The publication has reported that these changes to the App Store’s search algorithm started to get into place a few weeks ago. Returning better results on the store will be a win-win for both Apple and developers. Especially when it comes to apps that have hard to spell names or lengthy titles, returning a wider result span will help Apple keep the audience engaged.

There are many, many words in the English language that are misspelled regularly. Some of these, unfortunately, also make for important keywords for apps. Earlier this year App Store SEO firm SearchMan showed words like “restaurant”, “calendar”, “camera” and “shopping” are misspelled very often. When searched with some wrongly spelt words, the study saw that Google Play came back with far more app results than Apple’s App Store did.

More importantly, this will also eliminate the frustrations of not getting results because of “fat finger problems”. Hitting one wrong key would earlier cause a drastic drop in search results on the App Store. However, this changes now. We tried misspelling “Angry Birds” to see the results the App Store throws up. While “Angery Birds” brought up several results, “Agnry Birds” did not. Clearly, the changes are not too drastic right now, but are enough to make things better than before.

Have you noticed a difference in search results on the App Store recently? Let us know in the comments section below.
