App Store for Google Glass to be revealed in 2014

As the release of Google Glass is drawing closer, news has emerged that the App Store for the wearable device will be launched in 2014. There is no confirmation, however, about whether the store is to be a part of Google Play or a standalone store.

The Internet giant confirmed to Marketing Land on Tuesday that information published in a New York Times article published over the weekend was indeed true. The article published on Friday had said that the digital storefront for the wearable device will be arriving sometime next year, “when Glass is available to the general public.”

App store coming next year

There isn’t much about the store itself that is being spoken about. No timeframe for the release of the store has been given either. The company has not even confirmed whether developers will be able to release paid apps when the store goes live. This is major concern currently because under the terms of service for Google Glass right now, it isn’t possible to accept payment for the Glassware.

Google Glass is currently in the Explorer stage where only a handful of people have received Glasses. The Explorer tag will be shed sometime in the next year. A full-fledged App Store is the need of the hour for Google Glass with the public release drawing closer.

Interestingly, there’s a good chance this App Store will be associated with the Google Play Store – wholly or as a part. In July , when the Play Store was revamped, one of the titles threw up support for Google Glass too. Unfortunately, once clicked on, the site would show an error message indicating that the store had not been opened on the device recently. It could be possible that the store will only offer titles on Glass that overlap with smartphones and tablets. We cannot rule out a section for only Glass apps within the Play Store either.
