Anonymous protests across the country today. Will you be there?

The 9th of June is here and many cities will see Internet freedom enthusiasts come together and fight against Internet censorship. It’s the day that Anonymous has been preparing for and while we can only guess what their long term plans for after the protest are, for now the priority is raising their voice, so they can be heard on the ground. The protests being held today are STRICTLY non-violent and Anonymous, on their OpIndia website , has laid down some ground rules for keeping the peace. They said that absolutely no vehicles will be allowed on the protest site as this can lead to injury and ruckus. They’ve also said that no one is to bring or carry weapons like knives and stones. Furthermore, the hacktivist group recommends that if the police block the way, protestors should stay 50 meters away from them and absolutely, under no circumstances confront them. The group does say that if anyone starts any violence, other protestors should turn the trouble maker over to the police. There will be no fire or burning of any sorts of figures at the protest.

Anonymous strikes again!

Fighting faceless. Will you join them?

Protestors are encouraged to make posters and banners to support the cause. Protesters can also choose to wear the Guy Fawkes mask, which Anonymous has made available to print on their website. They also are encouraging protesters to share the protest online, either via social network posts, pictures, or livestreaming video. Below is a list of cities where the protest is taking place for certain, along with the locations in the cities where protesters must gather:

  • Mumbai: Azad Maidan, 4 pm till 5:40 pm
  • Delhi: Jantar Mantar, 4 pm till 7 pm
  • Chandigarh: The Plaza, Sector 17, 4 pm till 6:35 pm
  • Indore: Regal Square, no time has been specified
  • Kolkata: South City Mall, Prince Anwar Shah Road, 4 pm till 8 pm
  • Huderabad: Necklace Road: 4 pm till 8 pm
  • Bengaluru: MG Road, 4 pm
  • Kochi: Marine Drive, 4 pm till 5:30 pm
  • Calicut: Opposite Beach Hotel, 4 pm
  • Pune: Shivaji Nagar, 4 pm
  • Ahmedabad: Vastrapur: 5 pm

If you join the protest today, not only will you stand for the cause of free Internet, you will also be backed up by 350 students and professionals who have been reported to join the protest. The protests are in retaliation specifically to the John Doe order where ISPs were to block sites like Vimeo and The Pirate Bay. Anonymous has already struck back by taking down some government websites, as well as websites of MTNL and Reliance, but they need your help with conveying the seriousness of the matter. If you’re still not sure, here are reasons why you should join Anonymous’ protests today.

Paddy does not, we repeat, definitely does NOT belong in the category of Mac-head (yeh right!). She does get excited by her iPhone and her iMac and her iPod Nano and her Macbook and Bali's iPad and her future iHouse (patent pending). Ok, so maybe her head is a little bit forbidden fruit shaped. She likes shooting video (iPhone 4 camera zindabad!) and editing montages (Final Cut Pro zindabad!), whether the scene calls for it or no. In her spare time, she's either kicking it on stage with KB the keyboard or kicking butt at Taekwondo. see more
