Anonymous, that hacktivist group that claims to be all pervasive and completely unstructured at the same time has apparently declared “total war” on Donald Trump. Anonymous have allegedly published a video, clearly stating their intentions, and issued a call-to-arms for hackers the world over. They’ve also released a list of targets—Trump’s websites and related support sites—and intend to set the plan in motion starting 1 April (April Fool’s day). But first, watch the video below:
The response to the video and “Anonymous’” declaration has been openly mocking, to say the least. The authenticity of the video itself has been brought into question and Anonymous currently doesn’t have much of a reputation in the hacking community today. The video is also not from any “official” Anonymous source, but given the nature of Anonymous, you can’t say for sure. This is the second time that Anonymous has declared war on Trump, the first was on his statements over muslims. At the time, they brought down the website for Trump Tower and leaked a few voicemail messages, not really achieving too much. Anonymous call themselves a collective and are not much more than a set of ideals, not unlike a religion. If you believe in those ideals, you’re Anonymous. The beauty of Anonymous is that Anonymous is, well, anonymous. Nobody knows who they are, where they are, how they operate or if there even if they’re organised. Even if that sounds alarming, it’s not. Anyone can claim to be Anonymous and there’s nobody to refute that claim. If you were to wear a Guy Fawke’s mask put up a video tomorrow declaring war on, say, corn flakes, you’re Anonymous. The collective has so far declared war on the Church of Scientology, US and Israeli government agencies, sites featuring child pornography, the Westboro Baptist Church, ISIS/ISIL and now, Donald Trump.
