With the X series, Nokia along with Microsoft finally introduced a competitor to budget Androids. Though it works on a  forked version of the OS, it tried to blend Android goodies while still maintaining the Windows Phone goodness. Nokia managed to position itself in the sub-Rs 10,000 market with a trio of devices.

However, we wouldn’t call the phones even remotely successful. Months after releasing the Nokia X, the company has unveiled he X2, which will bring a refreshed hardware and software platform for the range. However, the original phones in the X series will miss out on the software update. It’s clear that the company is still trying to figure out the best way it can make the Microsoft-Android marriage happen. It’s also still trying to figure out the right balance of Microsoft’s services along with Android functionality, without impacting performance.

Now, if it happens to release a mid or high-end Lumia handset with decent specs and a new version of Android running underneath, as per the rumour, then we could have a new contender in the market. There’s still a lot of doubt about how exactly such a phone would work out, and whether Google would let this happen unhindered. It would surely want users to use Google’s services along with Android apps, rather than Microsoft services, which the Redmond company intends to ship with these phones.
