Android Nougat 7.1 based CyanogenMod 14.1 nightly builds start rolling out for select devices

CyanogenMod, popularly called CM, is a community-driven Android Custom ROM. The latest version is based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) version of Android, which is in-turn based on Android Nougat 7.1 and dubbed as CM14.1. The CM versions rolling out are called Nightly builds; general users are recommended to wait for Snapshot builds. Nightly builds are Beta, or Test builds rolled out almost every day by the developers. These builds should only be used by people who know what they are going and can get back to stock version without many problems. Snapshot builds, on the other hand, are stable versions without any known bugs. CyanogenMod community last released Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 based CM13 and skipped the Android Nougat 7.0 based CM14 to work on CM14.1 directly. The main reason for skipping was that Android 7.0 and Android 7.1 don’t have any groundbreaking or significant changes in the framework. Developers working on CM14 realised that CM14.1 had similar structure without any additional issues. Steve Kondik detailed the rollout, pointing out that these releases are very early and lack a lot of features like Themes. He also stated that the first wave of CM nightly builds will include the Nexus 6P, OnePlus 3, Nexus 5X, Xiaomi Mi4, LG G3, Moto G variants, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Zenphone 2. The list of devices will grow over coming weeks. Many developers will be happy to note that “CM is returning to its community-driven roots,” indicating the winding up of Cyanogen OS.
