Android 9.0 Pie update for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 expected later this year

Once the internal testing is done, a beta program for the Redmi Note 5 is expected.

Xiaomi has released a list outlining its update schedule for Q1 2019, which highlights the phones that will be getting the Android 9.0 Pie update. The list includes phones like the Mi 6X, Redmi S3 and Redmi 6 Pro as well as the Redmi Note 5.

The list was revealed on Xiaomi’s Chinese forums and indicates that internal testing for the aforementioned phones is planned for Q1 2019. One can thus expect the phones to get the update either in Q1 or Q2 this year.

If Google translate is to be trusted — the post is in Chinese — Xiaomi appears to be saying that its phones will get upgraded at least twice and that subsequent upgrades depend on factors like release date, stability, software experience, etc. The company also mentions that exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.

Once the internal testing is done, a beta program for the relevant phones will be launched.

Redmi Note 5 specifications

Launched in May last year, the Redmi Note 5 features a 6-inch  FHD+ display and is powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC. Variants include 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage as well as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage options.

The camera setup consists of a 12 MP rear camera and a 5 MP selfie camera.

The 4,000 mAh battery supports fast charging at 10 W.

At launch, the phone arrived with Android 7.1.2 Nougat, which means that the Android 9.0 Pie update could be its last major update.
