Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Sony Xperia T starts rolling out

It appears that Sony has decided to provide its Xperia T users with a gift before the year ends as the roll out of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is taking place ahead of its schedule, a report by Sony Viet notes.

The update is available for the international variant of the handset (LT30p) and the report notes that users are experiencing improvements in battery life as well as changes in image and sound quality. The update should reach your handset in the near future, if it not already has.

As of now, it appears that only the Sony Xperia T has received the Jelly Bean update and no other handset that was supposed to get the update early next year has received it yet.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Sony Mobile has shared its Jelly Bean upgrade plans for the above mentioned smartphones from this year. As per the post, the Jelly Bean upgrade plans for the Xperia T, TX and V are moving forward, and these smartphones will be upgraded to Jelly Bean during February and March. But it appears that Sony has had a change of heart and updated its Xperia T model ahead of schedule.

The Xperia P, J and go smartphones will be the next in line to receive the upgrade – from the end of March. Upgrades to the Xperia S, SL, ion and acro S will follow in the weeks to come after.

Sadly though, Xperia U, miro, tipo and sola smartphone users will have stay content with Android 4.0, since it has been decided to not upgrade these phones further. Sony Mobile shares that it will be bringing more information on the Sony Xperia Jelly Bean features and functionality in the New Year.

The company had only recently announced that the Android v4.1 (Jelly Bean) update will be released to a number of Xperia models in the first quarter of 2013. Late in October this year, it also shared the names of the handsets that are scheduled to receive the upgrade. At the time, however, there was no word on the date of availability of Jelly Bean for these handsets.

At the time, Sony had announced, “We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.” It now appears that as far as updates go, it is the end of the line for the 2011 Xperia models. Sony states that upgrading to versions higher than Ice Cream Sandwich would not guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience they expect and Sony demands. Sony will, however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

For those not in the know, the Xperia T comes equipped with a 4.6-inch HD display, Mobile Bravia Engine and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Here is a quick look at the highlighted features of the Sony Xperia T:

  • 4.6-inch HD Reality Display powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine
  • LTE, UMTS / HSPA+ radios, NFC
  • 13MP fast capture camera with LED flash and a 720p HD front camera
  • Full 1080p HD video recording capabilities
  • 16GB internal memory along with a MicroSD card slot
  • MicroSIM
