Analyst predicts 10 million iPhone 5 units will sell in September

Apple is set to take the wraps off the next iPhone at an event on the 12th of September 2012 and there have been a range of leaks regarding the device which include the back panel, home buttons and even what is believed to be the redesigned dock. Last year, Apple announced the iPhone 4S, which featured a similar design to the one found on the iPhone 4. Inspite of the similarity the smartphone still did really well in the market. However, many potential consumers were put off by the design and opted to wait for a redesigned iPhone instead. ZDNet reported  that Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted that should Apple launch the iPhone 5 by September, it may record sales between 6 to 10 million devices in the last 10 days of the month.

As per the report, Munster stated, “While our model, along with most of the Street, assumes an October launch, we believe that a September launch could result in the final 10 days of the month generating 6-10 million iPhone 5 unit sales, which would likely shift out of December. We believe if iPhone 5 launches in September, Apple could sell 26-28 million units in the quarter (this takes into account iPhone sales slowing dramatically from September 12-20, which is announcement to availability). This would imply 8% upside to the Street’s current $35 billion in revenue and 12% upside to EPS of $8.46.”

Apple could see as many as 10 million iPhone 5 units sold in the first 10 days

Munster later went on to add that the next iPhone could be, “the largest consumer electronics product upgrade in history.”

The change in design is a likely indicator which may propel Apple to reach these high sales figures and one of the biggest changes expected on the next flagship handset is that it will come equipped with a display measuring 4 inches diagonally.

The brand will launch a smartphone with a 4-inch display or larger. If Apple does intend to add a 4-inch display to their next iPhone, then this will be the first time they use a display size that is larger than 3.5 inches. The resolution of the next iPhone is believed to be 1136 x 640, with the width remaining the same.

With the possible change in design, we can also see that Apple will redo the design of the dock connector at the bottom and it will be a lot smaller in comparison. This change will apparently be implemented to fit the handset with LTE capabilities.

As for the display of the next iPhone, it is believed that Apple will incorporate a new technology called in-cell, which will help in making the handset a lot slimmer. This will help in negating the brand from using another touchscreen layer as with in-cell technology, the touch sensors are integrated into the LCD itself.
