AMD’s big secret is all set to erupt at approximately 3 PM EST which is roughly 12:30 AM tonight. We’ll be live blogging the event as it happens and if you choose to, you may even catch the live web cast which we’ll be updating shortly. This is a big launch for AMD as the company has recently been through an internal restructuring and they now have Raja Koduri back from Apple as the new Corporate Vice President of Visual Computing. With him at the wheel, AMD will be making some big announcements tomorrow, not only in hardware but software as well.
Continuing their island codenames for every new series of GPUs (the previous ones being Malta and Tahiti), the new card is rumoured to have “Hawaii” as the internal codename, which would make sense why they chose this location to launch it. This new card is said to feature their new Graphics Core Next 2.0 (GCN 2.0) architecture and will still be built on the 28nm fabrication process by TSMC. The new card is also expected to have a new naming convention so instead of being called the HD 8000 or 9000 series, we could be looking at something completely different.

We just hope it doesn’t add to the chaos as these new cards will be selling in tandem with their current HD 7000 series and HD 6000 series, which can still be found in the market. Given AMD’s previous track record, we assume they’ll be taking the top-down approach by announcing two high-end offerings first, followed by other cards down the price segment. In fact, this makes sense since the real threat for AMD is in the high-end space right now as Nvidia’s GTX Titan and GTX 780 are simply thrashing them in terms of performance. There’s a chance for AMD to break this stranglehold if they can deliver similar or better performance but at a much more aggressive price point as not everyone has $999 to spend on a GPU.
Hardware aside, we are also expecting a big announcement on the software front. We got a slight teaser of what to expect but unfortunately we can’t share this with you right now as it’s under embargo. Let’s just say it’s supposed to help game developers extract the best out of AMD’s GCN architecture for the PC as well as next-generation consoles.
