AMD Warns Intel About ‘The Legend of FX’

We’ve all seen and loved the new ‘ Gmail Man’ viral video; well it looks like AMD is thinking along the same line for their upcoming Bulldozer CPUs. As a promo for their Scorpius platform, AMD has posted a mini graphic novel called ‘Operation Scorpius: The Legend of FX’, which shows a group of eight (8-core Bulldozer chips) ninja warriors planning an invasion and a panic stricken opposition (dressed in blue, how clever is that) who are unable to defend their stronghold. The novel does not take any direct jabs at Intel the way Microsoft’s video did, but it’s still a fun read. There are plenty of hints thrown in relating to AMD’s use of Turbo Core and their graphical prowess (Ruby). You can download the PDF here or simply head over to the site to view it.

The Scorpius platform will replace the current Leo platform, which is made up of the Phenom II and a 6000 series graphics card. Similarly, Scorpius will include a Bulldozer (FX-series) CPU and their next generation graphics cards, which will most likely be the 7000 series. The FX series may launch earlier by the end of Q3 followed by a November launch of the 7000 series graphics cards. Meanwhile, their desktop Fusion APUs, codenamed Llanos has just started hitting the market ( Read the review) and will target low to mid-range PCs. The launch price is a bit on the higher side however, so it would make sense to wait a bit for the prices to settle down. With Intel all set to launch Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge in the coming months, it’s going to be very interesting to see how AMD fares, else this graphic novel will be nothing more than cruel irony.
