AMD announces Mullins and Beema mobile APUs for 2014

Chip-maker AMD has revealed its next-gen line-up of mobile APUs. Slated for release in 2014, the new APUs have been codenamed Mullins and Beema. According to AMD, the new APUs will be quite an upgrade over the previous generation, with more than twice the performance-per-watt than that of the previous generation—Temash and Kabini.

The new APUs also support Microsoft’s InstantGo technology, which allows devices to have faster wake times and makes sure that data such as email is actively refreshed in standby mode. The new APUs are also the first to integrate an AMD-developed platform security processor based on the ARM Cortex-A5, featuring ARM’s TrustZone technology for data security. The new low-power APUs join the previously disclosed high-performance notebook APU, codenamed Kaveri in AMD’s 2014 mobile lineup.

“AMD is establishing excellent momentum this year in the low-power, mobile computing market and with ‘Mullins’ and ‘Beema’ coming in 2014. We are not standing still,” said Mark Papermaster, AMD’s Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President. “AMD aims to deliver a set of platforms in the first half of next year that will outperform the competition in graphics and total compute performance in fanless tablets, 2-in-1s and ultrathin notebooks.”

Both new processor line-ups offer two or four Puma CPU cores, which are quite an upgrade over last generation’s Jaguar cores, and AMD Radeon graphics on a 28nm SoC. The new processors are planned to launch in the first half of next year and will be shown off at CES 2014. Going by the company’s roadmap, Mullins and Beema will be completing the company’s mobile APU line-up for the next year.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
