Amazon launches mobile shopping app for Indian Android users

Amazon was last seen in the news when its Appstore officially came to India back in May. The company, looking to capitalise on the booming mobile market in the country, has now launched its mobile shopping app for Android users. The new app will now give customers access to the whole range of products available on Amazon’s Indian site.

The mobile edition will also allow users to check out recommendations, customer reviews and also add to their wish lists through the app. New customers can sign up for an account on Amazon.in using the app, while existing customers can login using their Amazon.in username and password to access the same account they use via the Internet.

Customers who already have the Android app for the international Amazon stores can switch the country settings to India and start shopping on Amazon.in. The app can be downloaded from the Google Play store. Users can also get more information about the same on Amazon’s Appstore. Amazon’s India marketplace, though officially seen in May, went live in June.

The India site is the company’s tenth marketplace and aims to provide Indian customers with a shopping destination to purchase products from third-party sellers. The marketplace also allows sellers to list their products for both local and international customers. Users, on the website, have access to a full suite of services, including Selling on Amazon and Fulfillment by Amazon. The website currently charges Rs 49 per package for delivery, athough goods valued at Rs 499 and above will be delivered for free. Cash on delivery facility is available.

The suite as well as peripheral services are expected to be seen on the Android app as well. There is still no word on when an iOS or Windows Phone-based equivalent will be out for the market. Amazon’s India-centric Android app comes soon after rival Flipkart launched its own native Android app for the market. The latter was also in the news earlier in the day after CEO and co-founder Sachin Bansal tweeted that Flipkart was successfully able to raise $360 million in funding so far this year.
