Amazon has launched its Kindle Unlimited service in India at an inaugural price of Rs 99 per month which will be increased to Rs 199 per month from 1 October. Apart from this Amazon is offering a 6-month plan at Rs 166.50 per month (Rs 999 for 6 months) and an annual plan at Rs 149.92 per month (Rs 1,799 for 12 months). This is still much cheaper than the US plan which is $9.99 per month (approx Rs 660 per month). Kindle Unlimited, as the name implies, is a subscription-based service which will let you borrow ebooks from Amazon’s selected catalog for reading. You can borrow upto 10 books at a time. This includes ebooks as well as audiobooks from the Amazon catalog. Be aware that the Kindle Unlimited catalog will not include all the ebooks found on Amazon, but only a selected collection which still includes 1 million titles according to Amazon. Owning a Kindle isn’t mandatory as Kindle Unlimited also works with Kindle apps across platforms such as iOS, Android, PC as well as Mac. You will need to ensure that you have your country set to India on your Amazon account. Readers will get access to Amazon’s book titles across genres such as fiction, non-fiction, health, productivity, biographies, Indian writing and so on. Apart from this readers also get access to features such as Whispersync, Popular highlights, X-ray and so on. At the moment, the Editor’s Pick only has 20 books. Some of the popular book titles present on Kindle Unlimited include Harry Potter series (books 1, 2 and 3); Indian authors such as Chetan Bhagat, Amish, Rashmi Bansal and there are a lot of self-published titles as well. So yes, you may or may not get the book you might be interested in reading.
