With e-commerce rivals Flipkart hot on its heels, Amazon India has added Unified Payment Interface (UPI), as a payment option while shopping. The UPI option has been added to Amazon's mobile applications on Android and iOS but is not available yet for transactions made on the desktop site.
The payment method, which has seen rapid adoption in the past year, can be used for all transactions on Amazon India which are valued at Rs 10,000 or lower. The integration of UPI for Amazon could have taken a while because of the fact that its payment arm, Amazon Pay, works differently from Flipkart payments division PhonePe.
We tried it out for ourselves and using the payment option for transactions on the mobile app seemed quite simple. Users can find it right below the 'Net Banking' payment option on the payment method selection screen. A verification process will follow which requires the user to enter a UPI ID. Once the verification is done, Amazon allows you the option to proceed with the transaction and make the payment through the app you previously used to authenticate the transaction.
There is one thing that one needs to remember before selecting the UPI option and that is to uncheck the Amazon Pay option, which is generally the default payment option. In case of a failed transaction or a requested refund, Amazon will credit the amount directly to the bank account linked to the UPI ID. The refund may take a day or two to process, states Amazon, as is the case with Debit card and Credit card-linked transactions. You can head here for more payment related FAQs on the feature.
