Nadella has been strongly linked to the job ever since Steve Ballmer decided to quit in August last year. But just who is Nadella? The man who has spent over two decades in Microsoft is a rather quiet figure in tech circles. The “enterprise guy” of Microsoft could go from establishing Microsoft’s cloud computing infrastructure to CEO before too long, if he is indeed picked up for the job. The India connection Born in 1967 in Hyderabad, Nadella got his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from the Manipal University, in India. He soon moved to the US in order to continue his education and received his Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Nadella also went on to get an MBA degree from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Early years in Silicon Valley Prior to his stint at Microsoft, Nadella worked as a technology staff member with Sun Microsoystems. In 1992, he went on to shift companies and joined Microsoft as a Program Manager in the Windows Developer Relations group. To say his journey with Microsoft has been an interesting one, would be an understatement. Nadella rose quickly at Microsoft and became the Senior VP of Research and Development for the company’s online services rank. Further, Nadella was also made VP of the Microsoft Business solution group too The cloud guy Nadella had been a part of Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, and helped grow the product, while he was still with the team. That is, till Ballmer thought Nadella would be more useful running Microsoft’s $19 billion Server and Tools Business. Nadella was responsible for helping Microsoft’s technologies, its database, Windows server and developer tools to the cloud. This interview with GigaOM’s Om Malik gives us some insights into what Nadella thinks Microsoft’s future will be like. Magic touch Most importantly, Nadella’s stint as the President of Microsoft’s Server and Tools business is what has merited him a place in the probables for the position of CEO for the company. As President, Nadella replaced Bob Muglia and helped the company transform business and tech from “client-server software to cloud infrastructure and services.” Currently, Nadella heads Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, working towards developing and running computing programmes, developer tools and cloud services. As the resident “cloud guru” for Microsoft, Nadella helped the company post a 107 percent growth in revenue in its second quarter fiscal results. The binding agent Nadella and his team deliver work on delivering “Cloud OS”, Microsoft’s next-gen backend platform which powers all of Microsoft’s Internet scale cloud services, including Office 365, Bing, SkyDrive, Xbox Live, Skype and Dynamics. The platform is also responsible to provide products to businesses, including Windows Azure, Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio and System Center.
