Ridley Scott is bringing back its sci-fi horror to the big screen with Alien Covenant. The first trailer for the upcoming movie was just released and it seems that he is going back to the basics. The original movies were one of the best space thrillers of their time. Personally I loved the first two parts which were filled with spine tingling scenes and the strong-willed ‘Ellen Ripley’ played by Sigourney Weaver. I wasn’t quite intrigued by the third or the fourth part, probably because they seemed a bit desperate. However, in 2012 Prometheus proved that Ridley Scott wasn’t done with the series and had more to offer. While it seemed like a disconnect from the original series, it was set as a prequel.
Alien Covenant is a sequel for Prometheus, but a prequel for the original Alien series and another part of the puzzle as to how those nasty Xenomorphs came into existence. Coming to the trailer itself, there is a lot nostalgia. Hangar chase scenes, face hugging ovipositor and chest bursting baby xenomorphs and the final shower scene is bloody brilliant. Literally. We also see the return of David, the Android played by Michael Fassbender, who is seen exploring a new place with a brand new team. There isn’t a lot of clarity as to how the movie will roll, but I am assuming it will take off right after the events of Prometheus. Noomi Rapace will also be returning as Elizabeth Shaw, who was the sole survivor, along with David, at the end of the last movie. What I really liked about the trailer was that it showed a mix of old and new. While there will be high-tech and landscape-rich scenes like Prometheus, it will also offer the thriller that the Alien series offered. The movie is expected to release next year on 19 May.
