After launching 4G services in Chandigarh, Bangalore and Kolkata, Bharti Airtel today launched its 4G services across four towns in Punjab – Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara and Kapurthala. Subscribers in these areas will be able to access the Internet at high speeds on 4G-enabled smartphones and and other mobile devices. High speed internet is the need of the hour with users relying heavily on data for videos and social networking . Airtel claims that its 4G services allow users to upload holiday albums in less than five minutes or upload two high-quality photos per second and also connect multiple devices to routers.

LG G2, Xolo LT 900 and Apple iPhone 5s and 5c users can upgrade to the 4G network by installing a Universal SIM (USIM) or a 4G SIM. Subscribers can also experience 4G speeds with the Airtel 4G dongle and Wi-Fi routers. While the USIM is priced at Rs 49 for mobile users, it’s available for free with the 4G dongle.

One of the key reasons for 4G not picking up pace in the country is the lack of affordable devices, which has left service providers wary about making 4G widely available across the country. The device ecosystem is yet to mature in India and availability of affordable and wider range of devices is still a challenge. Disappointingly, even popular brands such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Tab S have entered the Indian market without LTE support .

However, in the last few months we’ve witnessed new smartphones such as the HTC Desire 616 and One E8 , and the LG F70 offering LTE support, which comes as good news to those who wish to try out 4G using mid-range phones. HTC will also be rolling out an **update for the One M8** , which will bring 4G support, in August. Service providers such as Airtel and Reliance Jio are also in talks with smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei to help introduce affordable 4G smartphones.
